Amazon Renewed sells used and refurbished products in four conditions: Premium, Excellent, Good and Acceptable (Amazon Renewed conditions). Premium is the top tier. This guide covers what it promises, where it beats the other three, and what it does not cover. Every claim here comes from Amazon's own help pages, but the product page for the exact listing is the final word on condition, accessories and return eligibility. Confirm it before you buy.

What Premium gets you
Amazon's conditions page sets three cosmetic and battery standards for Premium (Amazon Renewed conditions):
- No screen scratches.
- No visible body damage when the product is held 12 inches away.
- Battery greater than 90% of original battery life, where the product has a battery.
Premium is also the only Renewed condition that Amazon's return policy lists with a 365-day return window (Amazon Return Policy).
Like every Renewed condition, Premium products are professionally inspected and tested by a qualified supplier, which may be a third party (Amazon Renewed conditions).
Premium vs Excellent, Good and Acceptable
Scroll table sideways to read all columns.
| Condition | Screen | Body (viewed at 12 inches) | Battery at sale | Return window listed by Amazon |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Premium | No scratches | No visible damage | Greater than 90% | 365 days |
| Excellent | No scratches | No visible damage | Greater than 80% | 90 days on select products |
| Good | No scratches | Light scratches barely visible at 12 inches | Greater than 80% | 90 days on select products |
| Acceptable | Visible scratches allowed | Visible scratches and up to three minor dents | Greater than 80% | 90 days on select products |

Two things stand out in that table.
Premium and Excellent look the same. Both promise no screen scratches and no visible body damage at 12 inches (Amazon Renewed conditions). The differences are battery and returns.
Battery is another split. Premium requires more than 90% of original battery life at sale. Every other condition requires more than 80% (Amazon Renewed conditions). Compare that threshold with the price of the exact listing.

What Premium does not promise
Amazon spells out several limits that apply to Premium as much as to the lower tiers (Amazon Renewed conditions):
- The battery figure is a test at sale, not a lifetime guarantee. A Premium phone tested above 90% on the day it shipped. Amazon does not promise it stays there.
- Waterproof seals on phones are not guaranteed. Do not assume the original water-resistance rating still applies.
- Accessories and packaging may be generic. The charger, cable or box may not be the manufacturer's. Any exceptions are stated on the product page.
On returns, Amazon's policy notes that returns of items sold by third-party sellers may go to the seller rather than to Amazon (Amazon Return Policy). Check who the seller is before you buy. Our returns compared guide covers how this plays out across retailers.
Who should pay for Premium
Buy Premium if the product has a battery and you intend to keep it a long time. The greater-than-90% battery threshold and the 365-day return window are the two concrete advantages over Excellent (Amazon Renewed conditions; Amazon Return Policy).
Consider Excellent if cosmetics matter more than battery and the listing confirms a 90-day return window. You get the same no-scratch, no-visible-damage standard as Premium (Amazon Renewed conditions).
Consider Good or Acceptable if you are buying something without a battery, or you will put it in a case and do not mind marks. Good allows light body scratches barely visible at 12 inches; Amazon says its screen has no scratches. Acceptable allows visible scratches and up to three minor dents (Amazon Renewed conditions).
Whatever the tier, read the product page. It states the condition, any accessory or packaging exceptions, the seller, and the return eligibility for that exact listing.
Checklist before you buy a Renewed Premium listing
- Confirm the condition on the listing says Premium, not Excellent.
- Check the return window shown on the product page. Amazon lists 365 days for Premium; confirm the item is eligible (Amazon Return Policy).
- Note who the seller is. Third-party returns may go to the seller (Amazon Return Policy).
- Read the accessories and packaging notes. Generic items are allowed unless the page says otherwise (Amazon Renewed conditions).
- For phones, do not assume the waterproof seal remains intact (Amazon Renewed conditions).
- Test the battery as soon as it arrives. The threshold was measured at sale, and the return window is your remedy if something is off.

FAQ

Premium sets the strictest cosmetic and battery standard in the program, but accessories and packaging may still be generic (Amazon Renewed conditions).
How much battery life does a Premium device have? Greater than 90% of original battery life, tested at the time of sale. That at-sale threshold does not establish what capacity the device will have later (Amazon Renewed conditions).
How long can I return a Premium item? Amazon's return policy lists 365 days for Renewed products in Premium condition. Confirm eligibility on the product page (Amazon Return Policy).
Do Excellent, Good and Acceptable all get 90 days? No. Amazon says select Renewed Excellent, Good and Acceptable products have 90 days. Others may fall under the 30-day window that applies to many products. The product page confirms which applies (Amazon Return Policy).
Is a Renewed Premium phone waterproof? Amazon does not guarantee the waterproof seal on Renewed phones, in any condition (Amazon Renewed conditions).
Who inspects Renewed products? A qualified supplier, which may be a third party, inspects and tests them (Amazon Renewed conditions).
