What Does Renewed Mean on Amazon?

Amazon Renewed means pre-owned or refurbished items sold in four conditions. See who refurbishes them, what Premium adds, and how the Renewed Guarantee works.

Amazon Renewed is Amazon's label for "pre-owned and refurbished products" sold in one of four conditions, "Premium, Excellent, Good, or Acceptable" (Amazon Renewed program page). The refurbishing work is done either by Amazon or by a supplier Amazon has qualified. Every item is backed by the Amazon Renewed Guarantee, but the return window and any extra warranty depend on the condition tier and the specific listing, so the product page is the place to confirm.

Who refurbishes and sells

Renewed is not one company fixing up phones in one building. Amazon says the cleaning and prep work "is carried out by the qualified supplier or by Amazon" (program page). That means two items with the same Renewed badge can come from different hands.

The program page describes the standards those suppliers have to meet, not who they are. The listing itself tells you which seller you are buying from, and that is worth a glance before you add to cart. Rebuya shows you each seller's own stated terms side by side, but we do not inspect or grade anything ourselves.

One more thing the badge does not cover. Amazon warns that "A manufacturer warranty may not cover used products offered on Amazon.com" (Amazon return policy). Treat the Renewed terms as your coverage, not Apple's or Samsung's.

Standard versus Premium

Amazon sells Renewed items in four conditions. Premium sits on top, and Excellent, Good and Acceptable make up what most shoppers would call the standard tiers (program page).

The gap between Premium and the rest shows up in two places. The first is how the device looks and how its battery holds up, covered in the next section. The second is time to return it.

Amazon's return policy gives "365 days" to Renewed products in "Premium" condition (return policy). For the other three tiers, the same page says the 90-day window applies to "Select Amazon Renewed products in 'Acceptable,' 'Good,' or 'Excellent' condition types." Select is the word Amazon uses, so the 90 days is common but not automatic.

For how the Premium return period compares with a warranty, see our warranties compared guide.

Battery and cosmetic promises

This is where Amazon's own wording is most useful, because it is specific.

Premium items promise "No scratches" on the screen and no cosmetic damage "visible when ... held 12 inches away" (program page). Premium batteries are listed at ">90% of original battery life." Excellent, Good and Acceptable share a lower bar of ">80% of original battery life."

Battery life here means capacity compared with a brand-new unit. A lower capacity means less battery life between charges, so this number matters for daily use.

A few limits apply across every tier. Amazon says "Wireless devices don't come with headphones" and items "may be packaged in a generic box" (program page). It also says "Refurbished phones aren't guaranteed to maintain their waterproof seal." If you take your phone to the pool or the beach, that line deserves weight.

Guarantee versus ordinary returns

Amazon says "All products on Amazon Renewed are backed by the Amazon Renewed Guarantee" (program page). What the Guarantee gives you depends on the item.

The Guarantee page says "Most Amazon Renewed items include a 90-day return period," while "Renewed Premium and Renewed Automotive items come with a 365-day return period" (Amazon Renewed Guarantee). It also says "Returns are free of charge," subject to the page's stated conditions. Compare that with the regular Amazon policy, where "Most items can be returned ... within 30 days of delivery" (return policy). For eligible 90-day and 365-day items, that is longer than the ordinary 30-day window.

Some items work differently. Amazon says "Select Amazon Renewed items include Amazon's 30-day return period followed by a FREE 11-month limited warranty serviced by Asurion" (Guarantee page). That warranty covers "defects in material and workmanship." Accidents, water damage and third-party repairs are excluded. For a covered claim, Asurion will "either repair or replace" the device or provide a gift card or check, at its option.

So you may be looking at one of two structures. One is a long return window where you can send the item back. The other is a shorter return window plus a warranty that fixes defects but does not take the item back for a change of heart. Amazon tells shoppers to "check the product detail page for return eligibility," and that is the honest answer to which one you have (Guarantee page).

Before any return, Amazon asks you to "back up your data, disable phone tracking, unlink cloud accounts, and perform a factory reset" (Guarantee page). Do it before the box goes out.

For how these terms line up against other refurbishers, see our warranties compared guide.

What to check before you buy

  • The condition tier. Premium, Excellent, Good or Acceptable sets both the cosmetic promise and the battery floor (program page).
  • The return window on the listing. It may be 365 days, 90 days, or 30 days plus the Asurion warranty. Amazon says to check the product detail page (Guarantee page).
  • The seller named on the listing. The refurbisher can be Amazon or a qualified supplier (program page).
  • What is in the box. Packaging may be generic, and wireless devices do not include headphones (program page).
  • Water resistance. Not guaranteed after refurbishment (program page).
  • Manufacturer warranty. Do not assume it carries over (return policy).

FAQ

Is Amazon Renewed the same as used? Renewed covers "pre-owned and refurbished products" that have been through a cleaning and prep process by Amazon or a qualified supplier (program page). A plain used listing makes no such promise.

Does Amazon refurbish Renewed items itself? Sometimes. Amazon says the work "is carried out by the qualified supplier or by Amazon" (program page). The listing shows who the seller is.

How long can I return a Renewed item? Premium items get "365 days" (return policy). Most other Renewed items get 90 days, and some instead have a 30-day return period followed by an 11-month Asurion warranty (Guarantee page). Check the listing.

What battery life should I expect? Premium promises ">90% of original battery life." Excellent, Good and Acceptable promise ">80%" (program page).

Is a Renewed phone still waterproof? Amazon says refurbished phones "aren't guaranteed to maintain their waterproof seal" (program page).

Do I get the original manufacturer warranty? Not necessarily. Amazon says "A manufacturer warranty may not cover used products offered on Amazon.com" (return policy).
