Back Market said on July 9 that its refurbished MacBook and iPad business grew in the week after Apple’s June 25 price changes. On its own marketplace, US gross merchandise value for MacBooks rose 37% week over week and iPads rose 25%. The global increases were 43% and 32% respectively. Back Market also said global MacBook units sold rose 38% in that period. These are company figures for one week, rather than measurements of the entire US refurbished market.
For a US buyer, the numbers suggest more shoppers were looking at refurbished Apple computers and tablets after new-device prices moved. That is an inference from Back Market’s sales data. The release does not give the selling prices of its refurbished devices, so it cannot prove a particular MacBook or iPad became a better deal. A higher gross merchandise value can reflect units, prices or both; the company reports a separate global units figure only for MacBooks.
The release does not break the US results down by model, storage, grade or seller, and it gives no year-over-year comparison for that week. Check the exact model and configuration on a current listing, then compare the total cost with a current new price and the seller’s stated returns and warranty.
